For years, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

One recent example is a television show launched last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. International depictions frequently result in reinforcing this identical story instead of undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is presented as having been chosen by influential figures to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring permanent power.
