Playing Surface Issues

The contest was played on the Lakers' bright version of the special courts deployed across the association for NBA Cup games – but the player was concerned about safety.

“Adjust the courts, please,” Dončić stated after commending the format of the competition, now in its third season. “They’re too slippery. It’s hazardous... I slipped a lot of times. Many players were seen slipping. That’s dangerous, man.”

The game was the LA's first Cup game at Staples Center this campaign after commencing group play with two away matches. He admitted he didn’t recall whether the courts in the Pelicans’ arena and Memphis were more slippery than standard.

“Since they’re fresh surfaces, they’re difficult,” the player noted. “A few games ... should help break them in.”

Athlete Feedback

Complaints about the tournament courts are a recurring issue. Boston star Jaylen Brown reported he hurt his hip while playing on the Toronto’s NBA Cup court in the previous season, and other players have commented on the dangers of playing on fresh court surfaces.

LeBron James remarked he saw “several players” having difficulty on the court Tuesday, but didn’t feel it was unsafe himself.

“This is new territory for me, as I’ve always exited early,” Dončić explained. “With my background in Spanish basketball, I appreciate this format.”

When told he had secured at least $53,000 with the team’s group win, Dončić, who has $198 million in career earnings, grinned.
