NY Unveils Online Platform for Residents to Share ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens

The state attorney general has introduced a new digital platform asking locals to submit visual evidence of ICE operations throughout New York. This action comes just a shortly after a major immigration operation rattled NYC's Chinatown, sparking mass demonstrations.

US Citizens Held During Raid

A US congressman revealed during a news conference that four US citizens were arrested and detained for "about 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"All New York residents deserves to exist without intimidation," state officials wrote in a statement.

"If you witnessed and recorded immigration enforcement recently, I urge you to submit that material with us. We are committed to assessing these accounts and evaluating any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The form offers spaces to send photos and videos of the raid, plus a area to specify where it occurred. Before submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the office might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a court case or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say involved more than 50 government officers, happened in a famous district of NYC where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded en masse – frequently to visitors.

Videos of Tuesday's raid show several hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of New Yorkers trailed the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was noticed traveling down the Manhattan avenues.

Political Response

In a news conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be taken for unjustly." He said the citizens were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is merely a justification to incite violence for this administration to utilize the armed forces to prevent conflict that they themselves caused."

Widespread Condemnation

Anger over the immigration operation escalated – all three mayoral candidates criticized the incident, as did the state leader.

"Once again, the federal government chooses oppressive displays that instill panic, rather than security. It must stop," one mayoral candidate stated.

NYC community groups voiced concern as well.

"Immigration agents targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had no connection to community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," stated the president of a rights organization.

Official Guidelines

Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it refrains from take into custody citizens. Yet, external research has discovered that over 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the start of the present government.

Current Situation

Immigration operations have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide this year.

A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Protests opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous as are accusations of aggression and cruel conditions.

Most recently, a submission submitted by advocacy organizations stated inadequate care of pregnant women in government custody.
