Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
