Resurgent Medvedev Wins Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev won his maiden trophy for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a former world number one, has endured a challenging year, managing just a single victory at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in specific - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with former mentor Gilles Cervara.

Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested three-set win over opponent Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's initial championship following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hardcourt after March of the previous year.

Success also indicates the Russian has secured twenty-one victories at 21 different events.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to win a title is really nice," commented tennis professional Medvedev.

"This championship is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his last six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's retrieving approach and frequent outbursts on the playing surface had caused observers to wonder if his ability to play at the top level was concluded.

Yet the player has made changes in recent weeks, making an effort to come to the net and play assertively, supported by an enhanced serving game.

Medvedev recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky opponent, securing 4 of the last five points to gain the advantage.

The competitors traded break points in the second set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial tour title, seized the initiative to force a third set.

The opponent saved 4 early opportunities in a tight third set before Medvedev won the break to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, Medvedev earned the win with a rally at the net area, with Moutet failing to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
