The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots music venues.

Fender was given the cheque on October 16 as his third album People Watching was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues had in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the North East, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

He also participated, collecting over £100k on his live tour to help thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

These funds supported spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties caused by water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted funding support in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that funds from concerts in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

He is among several artists to contribute his award winnings to charitable organizations.

In Pulp earned the award in 1996 for their release the album, frontman Cocker announced that the act would give their cash to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her prize between several good causes, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked new equipment," she told a publication.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the community center that developed their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners the group gave their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was ample," said artist Small. "The cash was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our winning touched another person's life."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had rescued two local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in Bristol were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
