The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
