Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
