One of the original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial product within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
This latest announcement escalates the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after many years with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence had been compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
