Recently, Battlefield Studios introduced a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but features several notable changes:
So essentially, this mode lives up to its title: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides additional choices for gamers looking for alternative ways to enjoy the title. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many Battlefield 6 fans are upset.
"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," says another. At the same time, in community forums, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and someone else lists everything they consider to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're liking the new mode. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants prevent it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this title 24/7. Let them strike a balance," states a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Despite the support, players have constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase wait times even longer for other modes because of the large amount of playlists currently available. Similarly, certain regions already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of real players, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that a previous feature was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove bot farms from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising halfway, according to forum feedback. A different user labels this addition as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to change it?"
If the development team has proven anything so far with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and acting on feedback. Assignments being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they will not hesitate to change it again.
