The Mystery Within that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the memories of the villain Henry. The search for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is known about his research, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.
