The United Kingdom is set to progress with employing the total value of frozen Russian holdings to aid Ukraine's military campaign, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a shared declaration, the leaders of the Britain, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized that this unified step would escalate tension on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and urge the Russian Federation to come to the table.
They further noted that the move would be implemented in close cooperation with the United States.
UK sanctions have blocked more than £25bn of Russian funds since the Russian government launched its full-scale invasion against Ukraine in 2022. Yet, previously, money sent to the Ukrainian government using Russian funds had solely been taken from earnings and returns accrued on them.
Sir Keir told President Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, the French Republic, and Germany were in agreement in their aim to drive progress toward utilizing the full value of the seized Russian sovereign holdings to end the war.
He stated that more sanctions over the next period would apply more pressure on Russia.
This declaration is subsequent to European officials met in the Danish capital recently to discuss using immobilized Russia's funds for a €140 billion loan to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, US President Donald Trump called on international partners to seize or utilize seized Russia's holdings, according to reports.
The worth of frozen Russia's funds in the EU is assessed to be nearly €211bn.
Leader Zelensky urges Britain's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl program
Moscow executed large-scale aerial attacks all over Ukraine on Friday, leading to electricity outages in significant regions of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and multiple additional areas.
A pair of individuals were fatally injured and a minimum of 20 people were injured in the attack, authorities in Ukraine reported.
In a update on social media subsequent to the incident, Zelensky stated that the strategic strike focused on civilian and energy infrastructure.
"The necessity is not just talk but decisive action - from the US, the European Union, and the G7 - in supplying defense mechanisms and implementing penalties," he stated.
"Each restrictive measure undermines the Russian war effort," Zelensky noted, in a separate post.
Additionally that day, Zelensky told reporters he would encourage Sir Keir to join the weapons procurement program, under which Nato countries purchase weapons from the US to provide to Ukraine.
While applauding the United Kingdom's firm backing for the Ukrainian government, he said it should send a clear signal that it would take part in the system, as well as apply more measures on Russia.
