When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
