Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
