Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
